Movie - Departures

Just caught the Japanese movie "Departures" at Vivocity today. Rushed down after work to meet with LLL. Unfortunately we could only get seats in the very first row. Good thing it was not an action film, otherwise I would never have been able to catch what was going on, what with being so close to the screen and all. Really affects your vision when trying to follow movements across the screen.

The film (Japanese title おくりびと) was a typical heartwarming tale. Very Japanese in its understatedness and theme, actually. But it was a good film, and the comic moments were not overdone, as is often the case. The funeral scenes were good, but the family members in all of them being so grateful did seem a little contrived. The main character's wife needed just a wee bit more work in fleshing out as well.

Overall, a good film.

日本から帰ってきました。一週間の休暇をとったわけです。

再会できた方々、ありがとうございました。こんな私に時間をくれたわけですから。二年間にあまり成長していないのはすみませんでした。

会っていない方々、または連絡取らなかった方々、すみませんでした。時間が限られていたことと、行く前は仕事で忙しくて中々計画する時間がないことで、色んな先生・先輩・後輩・同級生・友人などに連絡を取らず行ってきました。

「何で日本に来て俺に教えてないの？」をいきなり私がレンタルした携帯に電話してきたJさん、また今度でね。

とりあえず、留学が終わったほぼ二年前に決まったこと「就職後、かならず大学の研究室の先生に会いに行きます」はやりました。

いい一週間でした。色んな人にもっと話したかったけど、しゃーないな。一週間で満足します。あと、ご馳走してくれたみんなにもありがとうございました。こんな一週間で１０回ぐらいご飯を奢ってもらいました。

ちなみに、結構買い物しました。漫画六巻、本一冊、Billy BanbanのＣＤ一枚。食べ物も。あともうちょっとCDと漫画を買いたかったけど、これ以上の贅沢はもう…

あと一言。それぞれの部屋に泊めてくれたFさんとPさん、まじありがとう。お邪魔しました。

Happy New Year! Very late I know. Let's see, oh, I haven't posted since September?!?!

In the interim, some of my friends got married, some people I only know from afar got married, my friends'kids were born, I started work, etc. Sorry, not in order of occurrence.

ライブ

さき、MISIAのライブに行ってきました。シンガポールに初のライブのようだ。とにかくエネルギーはすごかった。唯一よくない点は、30分遅く始まったことかな。あとは、けっこう楽しかったね。聴衆の半分ぐらいが日本人かな（あくまでも見積もりですよ）。日本人って、小さい子供をこんなライブにも連れてくるんだね。途中にこどもの泣き出しが聞こえたし。楽しんでいた子供もいましたが。

Am in Yogyakarta right now, having a good time overall. Have been to Borobudur and Prambanan. The weather here is drier than Singapore (it's the dry season right now) so it feels cooler. It's still hot in the afternoons, but not muggy like in SG. No rain either so far. Write more next time.

Packing

For my first backpacking trip to Europe, I prepared way in advance, planned and packed. After the first one or two trips, I've become a last-minute packer. I generally pack the night before (and rather late at that). Preparations are done quite late too. Maybe it's because I've got my packing list more or less standardised - I know I won't miss anything and that if I do, I'll still live. Maybe it's because of the feeling of laziness and not wanting to do anything that strikes me the afternoon before I leave.

Anyway, I'm more or less packed and ready to go. This is probably the last trip for my grey backpack that I got in 2001. Why? Well, some of the smaller pockets are torn and can't be used anymore. Hopefully it'll last through this trip. It's always the loading onto buses and airplanes that damage it, sigh. I'ld rather not check it in, but with all the rules restricting liquids, gels and etc. in hand luggage, I've opted to check it in this time.

Movies

Recently, I have watched "Hancock", "The Dark Knight" and "Red Cliff".

"Hancock" was a film with an interesting premise. Will Smith was believable in his role, but the tone of the film was uneven. Crude humour, then the touchy-feely stuff, then lots of action all mixed up. Sigh. It was cool though.

"The Dark Knight" was good. Very dark, though. It was a bit sad that Gotham was no longer as dark and atmospheric as in other films, although I guess it was meant to reflect that under Batman the city had cleaned up a lot. Nice touches throughout - I love the fact that the second time the Joker explains how he got his scars, you suddenly realise how twisted and manipulative he really is, not deserving of the little pity you may have given him when you first heard his story.

I didn't really get the ending though. Why blame the deaths on Batman? Just blame the Joker, or leave them unresolved. The ending speech by Gordon was somewhat illogical too, it sounded as if they just needed a speech that ended with those final words.

Good film, but seriously dark, and not exactly for kids.

"Red Cliff" was draggy. The battle scenes were good. The scenes where Tony Leung and Kaneshiro Takeshi converse are good. Some scenes were unnecessary though, I feel. The horse in labour. The pigeon flying across the water. The football scene.

And I'm sure some scenes were cut by the censors, as the shift in scene in certain cases was too sudden and jarring. Which means it must have been, oh, even longer originally?

Oh, and please, no more white doves in a John Woo film can?

Vietnam Day 8 & 9

Yesterday I took a day tour down to Halong Bay. The bay was nice, the tour was so-so.

Today, walked around Ha Noi a little, met my friend and had ice-cream, then coffee, then retired to his house, then ate at some streetside place nearby (balut, but with quail eggs instead), then left for the airport.

And here I am back in SG. I feel somewhat disoriented. Or rather, it seems strange that just a few hours ago I was in Vietnam...

Vietnam Day 6 & 7

Day 6 was spent riding in the train, sleeping and observing the people around. The scenery consisted mostly of padi fields; later on limestone outcroppings started to appear, prodding outwards from the fields around them.

It was raining in Ha Noi when I arrived.

Today, woke up early and walked round Hoan Kiem Lake, saw the One-Pillar Pagoda, the outside of Ho Chi Minh's Masoleum, the Temple of Literature, and wandered around the Old Quarter. Traffic here is not as chaotic as Sai Gon, but the streets are narrower and feel older. At least, in the Old Quarter they do. Everything here seems to cost more than in Sai Gon - am I being overcharged? There's a real problem with copycat businesses here, worse than in Sai Gon.

The lake was beautiful in the morning. It's getting hot, I shall retreat to some air-conditioned place soon.

Vietnam Day 4 and 5

Spent most of day 4 in a train. The view was mostly of forest and padi, except for a stretch near the end after passing Danang, where there were great views of the sea.

Found my hotel and walked around the town a little, had dinner, went back to the hotel, did my laundry and that was the end of the day.

Day 5 (today), woke up early, and went to the Imperial Palace in Hue. Spent about 2 hours there from 7.30 am to 9.30 am. Everyone wakes up early in Vietnam. I was up by 6 and on the streets by 7 but so was 'most everyone else. People playing badminton or jogging in the parks, or just chilling out at the street stalls before going to work, I guess.

The palace was stunning. I took lots and lots of pictures, till I got tired.

The weather was hot by the time I finished, so I had a late breakfast and then retreated to a mall. Then ate some more before retreating to the town area. Going to look for a place to have tea/coffee and just relax later on.

Tomorrow, it's onwards to Hanoi.

Vietnam Day 3

Spent today on a tour of the Mekong Delta. Joined this tour run by Sinh Cafe, on the recommendation of one of my Vietnamese friends that they are well-known. Well, they must be. They have a wide selection of tours and there was a huge crowd of people outside the place this morning waiting for their various buses.

For my group, we went to My Tho and Ben Tre. While waiting to board the little boats that would take us to the various islands in the delta, there was a huge bridge under construction next to the jetty. Believe it was the Rach Mieu bridge, apparently it will be completed next year.

Anyway, the day was spent visiting farms where we were shown how they make rice paper, honey, coconut candy and so on. Even had a short performance of traditional Vietnamese music for us. What really impressed was that there was none of that in-your-face style of pushing you to buy stuff. Wares and goods were on display but at no time did you feel you were being forced.

Met a lot of nice people on the tour, there were Japanese, Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, and one German guy who had apparently been travelling for almost a year.

Vietnam Day 1 and 2

Arrived in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday morning. Flying in, from the plane you could see rivers and irrigation canals running through areas of padi fields. The international terminal for the airport is really new and clean, but small. I resisted offers of taxis to catch a local bus (no. 152) down to the city centre, to the area where most of the backpacker hostels and budget hotels are - Pham Ngu Lo and De Tham. Got myself a room, a sim card, had pho for lunch and then visited the Reunification Palace.

The Reunification Palace was really worth the visit. Really spacious and clean-lined architecture, while the rooms were furnished just as they were in the 60s, with Vietnamese art. The basement was really dark and brooding, kept pretty much the way it was when it was a command centre in the war. Had tau hua while I waited for my friend. Interestingly, they put ginger in it. Walked around Dong Khoi and the area with my friend, who later brought me to dinner at this great restaurant to have Hue noodles. The soup was like that of pho, but with more spices, like a lighter and clearer version of tom yam...

The traffice here is chaotic. Motorbikes everywhere.

Today, so far I've visited the War Remnants Museum, walked all over town and ate at Lotteria (there's no MacDonald's here). The reason I ate at Lotteria? Primarily to get out of the hot sun. The streets here, by the way, are mostly tree-lined and quite cool. Also found this street that has a very high concentration of Japanese restaurants, more than I've seen in Singapore so far.

The weather here is hot, so everyone comes out at night, except for the tourists of course, who can be seen wandering around even in the daytime.

Oh, I ran into my friend from Singapore, entirely by chance. Rajah and Tan from Singapore is having their firm's trip to Vietnam right now, apparently. What a coincidence!

お！久々に旅にでるぞ！明日の朝からベトナムへ。一週間ぐらい。というか、まだ荷物整理していない状態で、現在は夜中で、航空便は朝の七時ぐらいですわ。やっぱり短い旅だとこんなになります。慣れ慣れで、最後まであまり準備しません。ま、これからですね。

Wah, Nadal won! I'm having mixed feelings because before the match I couldn't decide who to support. And I didn't get to watch the match. Switched on the TV, saw them play for a few minutes and then play was stopped for rain... Then I find out today that play resumed later. Argh! I missed such a historic match.

Hmm, why so many sports-related posts recently? Don't know leh, I'm not really that into sports actually some more...

よく勝ってくれた。ようやく。俺は後半だけ見た。途中に10分ほどドイツがまた強くなって、まさかスペインのメンタル的な弱さがあわれ、その時点で負け始めるという恐い想像…　でもスペインは今度こそという感じで、今度こそもう自爆なんかしないよっていう感じでまたゲームの支配を握った。

とにかくパスはすごかった。綺麗過ぎる。そして持ってる自信も。

先 Roland Garros の決勝戦を見ました。Nadal は完全に clay の王様だね。Federer も Djokovic も　straight sets で負けました。

この前の金曜日に泳ぎに行った。今日はバドミントン。そう、そう、もう運動を始めなきゃ。

World Cup qualifiers

Ugh. Singapore lost 7-3 to Uzbekistan. For once, we scored goals. But what happened to our defence? Sure, the Uzbekistan team was good, but were we ever this bad? The commentator noted that this was Singapore's worst defeat in a long time. It was still fine for the first thirty minutes up to the 2-2 scoreline. Most of the second half was decent too. But oh, the last 15 minutes of the first half. When we dropped to 5-2 down. And the last part of the second half.

Decent SG players: Duric, Shi, Wilkinson, Khairul. SG player that impressed me most: Noh Rahman. Better performance than the rest, visibly more effort, and loads more fighting spirit. Challenged for the ball, was a crucial defender, went up to attack. Yah, basically, you just kept on seeing him where the action was. Kudos to him.

I wonder about tomorrow's headlines...

Positive things to take away: the Singapore team never stopped playing to win. Kept coming back.

Just... what was wrong with our playing skills?!

最近ニュースをネット上で読んだら、こんな記事があってさ。Woman lived hidden in Japan flat。福岡という名を読んだら、すごく気になった。粕屋らしいだね。ああ、福岡ってば。こんな面白い日々があったっけ？まさか俺の押入れにもだれか住んでいたかい？

やはりたまにちゃんと掃除をするのも大事だね。

Boats and the ocean

If you know me personally, you're probably aware that I studied my degree in a field to do with ships and the ocean. (This course wasn't offered in NUS or NTU back then, so yes, I'm an oddity) I also hope to learn scuba diving some time. So, no surprise then that I went to Asia Dive Expo 2008 and Boat Asia 2008. For the dive expo, it wasn't a grand affair, but I picked up some brochures. Boat Asia, in comparison, was grand. Well, when you showcase leisure boats, luxury is key. I took lots of photos, and got onto some boats. Wow, the interiors really impressed me. On the other hand, some of the smaller boats (without rooms and so on) were actually cheaper than cars in Singapore, I believe...

シンガポールには桜はいないわ。にもかかわらず、日本に春が来て、学年が変わる時期であることは感じる。何でかというと、この一ヶ月に、日本の友達が何人か来ていた。まずはS.マーくんだね。あいつは何回かシンガポールに来たことがあるから、（旅客に）あまり知られていない場所でごはんをしようと思ったら、急に「友達も連れていますよ」という情報が来て、「Chilli crabを食べたいって」という発言が次に。ということで、BugisとLiang Seah St あたりで海鮮料理を。もっと準備する時間があったらEast Coast Parkでカニを食べるほうは雰囲気がいいと思うが。ま、マーくんなどと楽しくご飯を食べた。

その後は韓国のJくん（日本に留学しとうが）と彼女の到着だね。これはもう、Esplanade の hawker centre で色んなローカル料理をご馳走した。その後は夜景を。

また、この間はブルネイのFくんも日本に帰る途中で航空便の関係でシンガポールで何時間を過ごさないといけないわけだ。こんどはVivocityで。Marcheに行こうと思ったら、週末のせいで列が長い。地下の Kopitiam に行った。

あっ、最近、美味しい日本料理を食べる機会もあったよ。ほんまにうまかったわ。

まっ、みんな春休みを十分楽しんだそうで、これから新しい学期に入る人も、就職する人も、仕事をがんばって続ける人も、さくらを見て元気を入れてね。（出して？）

Dim Sum Dollies - The History of Singapore

Just watched the Dim Sum Dollies - The History of Singapore at the Esplanade tonight. I've heard so much about them and even seen a few clips on the internet, but never had the chance to catch one of their shows, so I had made up my mind to catch this run. As it is, I was heading towards the Esplanade wondering if I should buy tickets for another day, but made up my mind upon reaching the ticket counter to catch it tonight (Sat, 23rd Feb).

It was hilarious and fantastic! My only minor grouse: some of the song and dance routines went on a mite too long. The way they weaved contemporary issues into skits portraying Singapore's history was wonderful. In particular, the skit on Sang Nila Utama and the finale were really memorable for me.

Had dinner/supper at the food centre next to the Esplanade. There was some performance going on at the outdoor stage next to it, but I was tired and didn't hang around long.

OBの食事会

この間、福岡に留学しているある方がシンガポールに三週間ぐらい戻ったため、今日はこの数年間に福岡に留学したシンガポール人を集めて食事をしました。結局10人が来ました。さすがあの方の面子が大きいからそんなに集まりましたね。あいかわらず、半分以上の人は遅刻しました。ははは、これって、日本に集まったときと一緒ですね。

結局、ほぼ四時間レストランにいましたね。昔の思い出、今の福岡の現状、現在シンガポール人は何人いる、数年前の地震、懐かしく思うデパート、食べ物など、色んな話題で盛り上がりました。また、皆さんは今何をしているについても。

すごく楽しい時間でした。今度はまたね。

New Year

Happy Chinese New Year! Wow, what a jam-packed schedule it has been. On the eve of CNY, had reunion dinner with my family. First day, went to my grandfather's (father's side) place. Then went to my grandmother's (mother's side) place. From there, the whole gang of relatives proceeded to my 5th uncle's (mother's side) place, and thereupon to my 7th uncle's (mother's side) place. Well, I didn't join them for those two visits. Today, however, I rejoined the rounds and visited: 2nd uncle's place; 4th uncle's place; a cousin's place; 8th aunt's place (all on my mother's side). Some of them also came to our place. I feel quite tired now, but it was great to catch up with all of them after so many years away.

Have some friends coming over tomorrow too.

ご存知な方もいるかもしれませんが、Helsinki で始まった運動（最初に実現したところは UK の Birmingham だけど）Complaint Choir は名前の通り、人を集めて文句を唄う合唱団を作る運動です。そして、シンガポールにも来ました。シンガポールで有名な blogger、mr brown のサイトで初めて見ました。ビデオは下に乗せました。そして、歌詞も。特に、chorus（サビ？）の歌詞がいいなと。日本にもこの運動は着陸しましたかな？

Watched the semi-final between Djokovic and Federer 2 days ago.

Watched today's final between Tsonga and Djokovic. Wow, it was a really intense match. And physically exhausting too. Tsonga was wonderful, but I think in the end Djokovic's experience allowed him to edge ahead.

先ほど Australian Open の男性準決勝をテレビで見ました。昨日は Federer と Blake の間の準々決勝を。昨日の試合はすごかった。Blake はよくプレイしたが、Federer は戦ってさらによくやって結局勝ちましたね。一人の commentator はこう言った「他の人から最近は『無敵』から『強い敵』になったと評価されたが、straight sets で勝ったのにベストの50～60パーセントを出している状態と言われるものだと考えると、どんなレベルの選手だとわかりますね。」

そして今日の試合。Tsonga と Nadal 。もっとすごい試合ですね。なんですか、この Tsonga ?間違いをしなかったと言えるでしょう。Nadal は別に悪くプレイしたわけでもないのに、straight sets で Tsonga に負けました。感激。感動。そのフランス人、強いし、技術もあるし、コントロールもいいし。すばらしい試合でした。Nadal もあきらめず戦ったのでさらに面白いし。見て正解！

Last Day

Woah... a few more minutes and it will be 2008! Why am I at home and not outside? I'm recovering from a minor op for my ankle ligament (Brostrom repair).

So how was 2007 for you? In my case, basically 2007 can be divided into January to March, when I was still in Japan, and April to December, when I was back in SG. The contrast is startling, sometimes it seems as though Japan was all a dream, sometimes it feels like the life I'm in right now is just an interlude. Perhaps 2007 was all about finishing up my studies, and then rediscovering Singapore - it has changed a lot! As for 2008? Well, once my ankle recovers in a few months time I hope to start running again. Should start work in August 08 too, we'll see how that pans out.

そして、日本にいる友に、紅白を見ていますか？今年は年賀状送っていませんけど、ごめんなさい。今度また連絡をとりますからね。

もう12月になったか

After reading this post about a 20% off sale for card members, I know where I want to go this weekend... Too bad I already bought one manga last weekend. On the other hand, I haven't gotten all the stuff I wanted. Kinokuniya, here I come.

Going to watch "Pillowman" tomorrow. Maybe I'll drop by the bookstore before that.

シンガポールでは、福岡より遅くまで外に遊びますね。昼間は熱いから、やはりシンガポール人は涼しい夜の中を十分に利用します。僕も夜の道をきれいと思います。街から家に帰るバスの中から外を見、なんか落ち着きます。

Just found out recently that my job posting will only be confirmed in March next year. So I'm still in a state of limbo as of now - unsure as to the actual department and details of the job. This wouldn't be so bad if it were not for the fact that all along I was told they would get back to me in October. Wait some more lor.

今日は久々バドミントンをしました。前に友達に誘われたことがあって、今日やっと参加してみました。ああ、やはり長い間していないから最初はちょっと鈍いでした。でも、二時間ぐらいしていい運動になりました。特に右肩の動きにすごく利きました。今度もまたしましょう。

Starvation in Japan

There was an article in today's Straits Times about the welfare system in Japan, focusing on a man who starved to death this summer in Kitakyushu. I found an online version at the New York Times website here. It's a very sad case, and it kind of strikes close to home since I lived in Fukuoka previously. My church used to give out food to the homeless once every two months, and I know of other churches that had similar activities on a larger and more regular scale, so the presence of such poor people is no surprise to me. Unfortunately, they remain mainly an invisible problem to the public in Japan. Not many people actually think of them. The whole incident strikes me as very sad.

日本の記事とかは七月ぐらいに出たようだから、見つけるのは少し難しかったが、一応ここにまだありました。ええ、非常に淋しく、悲しいニュースですね。特に福岡でホームレスをたくさん見たことがあるから、実感がありました。

童話について

この前、HMV に行ったとき、中孝介という歌手のアルバムを見ました。今まで知らなかった歌手（Wikiしたら結構最近デビューしたみたい）けれども、「童話」という歌があって、まさかと思って聞いたら同じ名前の中国語の歌のカバーでした。ええ、珍しいですね。J-pop の歌が香港か台湾の歌手にカバーされるのはよくあることですが、逆の方向のはめったにありません。聞いてみました。

日本語版はこちらですね。MV はないで曲だけです。元の曲の MV はこちらでどうぞ。実は、ずっと思ったが、香港か台湾のミュージック・ビデオには短い映画のように何かのシーンか話を描くものが多いです。日本の方は主に歌手が歌っているか踊っているぐらいですね。アメリカのも大体そうですけど。なぜこの話を？あ、この「童話」のMVはまさにそうの適例ですからね。見てくださいね。

そして、本当は中国語と日本語の歌詞を比べたいが、ちょっとめんどくさいから、今度はやめましょう。

あ、言い忘れました。元の歌手は光良という人です。

You might not get all the jokes if you haven't lived in Japan, but it's still ridiculously funny! And no, you better not follow the steps in the video if you go to a real sushi place...

Eating out

Well, didn't get to write much for the last few weeks, so perhaps it's time to update on what I've been doing... Hmm... 3 weeks ago I went out with my family to Waraku, a Japanese restaurant. We went to the branch at Central, recommended previously by friends. It was good. Not an up-scale high-class restaurant, but the food was authentic and the price was not high either. Worth a repeat visit.

Just this previous weekend met up with some of the other Singaporeans who studied in Japan as a Malaysian friend of ours was stopping over on his way home from Tokyo. Being informed of the gathering only the night before, I blithely assumed we would be eating neither Japanese or local cuisine, only to find out that due to our organizer's desire to finally prove that our local fare can match Malaysia's, we were to lunch at Straits Kitchen at the Hyatt hotel. We started on the buffet without asking the price, and only found out the true cost upon payment. To sum it up - the food was great, but the price was high.

By the way, the economy must be doing well this year. Just look at the masses that descended upon the mooncake fair at Takashimaya...

あ、そのあと、偶然と知り合いに出会って（シンガポールって本当に小さいって感じだな）、一緒に映画（ Bourne Ultimatum ）を見に行きました。いい映画でした。話は本と違いますけどね。

At the library

Am at the National Library with my notebook PC now. On a weekday! Finally out of camp, after a gruelling spell. Not really physically taxing, but with combat shoots and live firings, we didn't have a proper weekend last week. And this weekend is taken up by the Army Half-Marathon, which means booking in and out ,and in again on Saturday and Sunday. So I'll enjoy this day off as much as I can...

And in recent reading, I got round to reading "The Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnegut, as recommended by satoshiyamada. Yup, as he said, it abounded in irony. It really makes you think. I guess the main thrust of the book is "What's the point? Who's in control?", although it might also be just a fantastical SF parody. The book reminded me of Douglas Adam's Hitchiker series, although it's more ironic and of course, the flavour of it isn't British at all. I can't decide if the writer is just playing with the story for ironic effect or really wants to say something. Possibly both. It needs a second reading, but I'll leave that for later. You should read it too!

昔のことが夢だったと感じるときありますか？掴めない幻にすぎないと思うときありますか？シンガポールに帰ってからもう四ヶ月が経った僕。なんか日本にいる七年間が夢みたいで、本当に行って帰ったかと疑うぐらい。生活環境があまりにも違うからですかな。日本にいる時も、シンガポールの生活がたまに遠く感じました。これ、旅行に行ってきた感じと似てますね。そう、日本におった時間が短い旅行と等しい感じですね。でも、本当は短い間ではなく、もっともっと大事な意味があったでしょう？大事な思い出、大事な経験を得て帰ったでしょう？

ん、もっと考えたら、夢だと感じることは、その七年間は昔々にあった感じから生じるのだと思います。遠い昔に起こったから、幻に近いとなりつつ…でも、実はそんなに昔ではないはずですよね…

Rainy days

Wow, it's been raining heavily each day for quite a few days now. And July and August are supposed to be relatively dry... Good thing is that the rain keeps the weather nice and cool. You know, rain is one of the defining features of Singapore. It rains anytime, anywhere, all year round. And when it rains, it can really rain. That's why many of our canals are so deep and wide. I'm always impressed when the little stream at the bottom of the canal along Bukit Timah Road swells into a raging torent within an hour of rain.

Today, of course, it rained too. Well, it stopped in the morning, so after church I went down to Orchard, jalan-jalan for a while, then met some friends for dinner. Unfortunately, the recommended place at Cuppage Plaza was closed (some place called Ueno) so we adjourned to a run-of-the-mill izakaya in the same building. Went looking for Island Creamery (that famous place in Serene Centre) after dinner at Centrepoint based on a rumour that they also had a store there but failed to find it. Guess it's only at Serene Centre then. Proceeded to Coffee Bean etc. etc. etc.

Wonder if it'll rain tomorrow...

この前、日本の友達 K さんが出張でシンガポールに来ました。だから、先週の日曜日に Orchard Road と Clarke Quay に連れました。晩御飯は Paragon の Ding Tai Fung （鼎泰豊）で、そのあとは Clarke Quay の Brewerkz で飲んだ。そして、今週の金曜日に Esplanade あたりに行った（こことここに行ったけど）。相変わらず Starbucks が好きな K さんでしたね。残りの時間にまた会いましょう！

Okinawan dinner, Transformers

During the week I got a voice message on my handphone - turned out my Japanese friend S.M. was in Singapore and was leaving on Saturday. So we met up on Friday night for dinner at an Okinawan restaurant which was his recommendation. (Apparently he had been there on previous trips to Singapore.) Nice ambience, really down-to-earth Japanese izakaya called Nirai Kanai at Tanglin Shopping Centre. Prices for the food are reasonable, although drinks are expensive. Anyway, we had souki soba, rafutei, goya chanpuru and one of my favourite tsumamis: tako-wasa. Hmm, Travelling Hungryboy (one of the food blogs I read) has a post about the place too.

We adjourned to Starbucks after that. It was a good time with S.M. and his friends. Anyway, another Japanese friend is coming to Singapore soon.

Watched the Transformers movie today. Cool effects. Great action. Wished they gave the other robots besides Bumblebee and Optimus more screen-time though. I mean, you didn't really get any feel of Megatron being evil, you know? And the preachy soliloquising by Optimus Prime at the end was quite corny, but then, he really did speak like that in the cartoons, so.

今日は普通に教会に行ったあと、Orchard に行った。そこでちょっとデパートを歩いて、本屋（紀伊国屋）に行って、図書館に行った。それから Far East Plaza に行って、Anatolia というトルコ料理屋で友達と飯を食った。彼らは僕と同じく福岡に留学した（またはしている）シンガポール人です。短い一年間の交換留学生の人から、長い十年間以上留学している人までも居た。合計7人の集まり。よかった、よかった。皆はいま何をやっているの、あの時の思い出、福岡のことなどなどについて話した。

Orchard Road

So, you know I like books right? My favourite library used to be the one at Queenstown, but due to circumstances I no longer haunt ye olde library there anymore. For the last 10 years (or more, memory fails) I usually go to the one at Taka. Recently Jurong Regional Library is also becoming a favourite haunt, ever since I found out they redid the whole place.

So anyway, I dropped by Orchard libary that day, went to Kinokuniya to check out the prices for some comics and Japanese manga, then went to Borders. And of course, as usual, ended up having dinner in one of the regular dining places I frequent at Orchard Road.

この前の「明日」

自分の場合は、「あした」といつも読んだけど、どっかで「あす」のほうが正しいと書かれた、確かに。でもネットで探したら両方の読み方もいいらしいですね。

この前の月曜日、同じく九大で留学した先輩とめしを食った。なぜかシンガポールの回転寿司で。(Sakae Sushi というチェーン店）いや、味とかはまあまあだね。久しぶりに会った先輩と福岡の話をして、なんか日本の100円寿司に戻った感じはちょっとあった。

ちなみに、シンガポールにちゃんとした和食があると聞いたけど、まだ行ってないよ。いつか他の帰った留学生にちゃんと場所を聞こう。

日本はもう梅雨ですかな。（ここで天気予報をチェック。）紫陽花もう咲きましたかな。福岡を離れたとき、学校のさくらとツツジは咲いていましたけれども。日本で紫陽花を初めて見たのは大阪で。大阪外大から「マルヤス」と「サンピア」というスーパーまで降りる坂の途中で咲いていました。確かに他のシンガポールの留学生から聞きました。「あれ紫陽花です」か「道に紫陽花ありましたよ」か。2000年だった。チューブの「虹になりたい」と「紫陽花」が出た年です。Those two songs were among the first few J-pop songs I listened to. ええ、懐かしいです。大阪におった時、日本の雨はシンガポールと違って、母国を恋しくなった思い出があります。確かに

Tried reading a Stephen Coonts novel, found it only so-so. "Oak", which was a non-fiction book, was pretty good, I found all the bits pertaining to the use of oak in ship-building particularly interesting. "A Hat Full of Sky" was more of the usual Terry Pratchett.

Visited the Navy Open House 2007 held at Changi Naval Base today. As the holder of a Naval Architecture and Marine Systems Engineering degree, how could I pass up the chance? Photos here. Didn't see any AUVs, although the anti-mine submarine might classify as one. And the USV - Unmanned Surface Vessel is a close relation. Got to board most of the ships, which was my main reason for going. No chance for the submarine though, the interior is still highly classified it seems. The ride on the FCU (which was an unexpected perk of visiting the Landing Ship Tank) - a water jet propelled fast craft - was cool. Especially when they pushed up the speed.

All in all, a very satisfying day.

兵役また始まった

はい、兵役また始まってしまった。帰国してから一か月が過ぎたところ、木曜日に兵役が始まった。ベッドやトイレなどの設備は少しよくなりましたが、周りの空気は全然変わっていません。とにかく楽しくないです。日本にいると、「軍隊？楽しいでしょう！」、「鉄砲を撃った？面白い！」とか言われます。とくに男の人に。（あほ～）「大変ですね。」を言う人も居ます。そちらのほうは全然正解です。入りたいから入った軍隊や自衛隊はともかく、義務だから入った兵役は楽しくないです。（シンガポールでしか経験したことないが）自分がやりたいわけでもありません。周りの人も主にやりたいわけでもありません。自分は軍隊にふさわしくないかもしれません。周りの人に軍隊にふさわしくない人が多いです。とにかくモティベーションは低いです。

とりあえず、これからブログやメールをしっかりする機会は少なくなりますから、日本にいるみなさん、ごめんね。連絡の流れはボツボツになります。特にQREPのメールはありえない速さで来ていますから、いつ全部を読むことになるでしょう…

ああ、日曜日の夜に基地に帰るとき、うつ病になるでしょう…

帰国後の買い物

お久しぶりです。シンガポールに帰ってきてからそろそろニ週間になります。色々整理して、友達に会ったりして、のんびりしています。あと、図書館に行って本を借りて読んでいます。そして、意外に買い物をしています。日本ではほとんどしないのに。

まあ、買い物も帰国したからしないといけないのですね。

Everytime I return to Singapore, one of my first stops is the library. This time, although I'm returning for the long run, it was no different. I visited the library on Monday. Since then, in four days I've read four books (thin paperbacks, not thick novels). They are: "Tooth and Claw" by Jo Walton, "The Truth" by Terry Pratchett, "Velocity" by Dean Koontz, and "Lost and Found" by Alan Dean Foster. The latter three are all familiar writers whose work I've read often and continue to love. Jo Walton's book I picked up on a hunch and it didn't disappoint me. Now to find a Stephen King novel...

日本の最後のニ週間

前に言いましたが、QREP（アメリカに行くプログラムの名前）から帰ってきてから、ニ週間はいっぱいいっぱいでした。そして、なにをやったかというと：

19日：研究室の教授の最終講義と祝賀会
20日：QREPグループとミーティング
21日：前の研究室の教授の最終講義と祝賀会
22日：（朝）研究の引き継ぎ、（昼）QREPグループとミーティング、（夜）昔のサークルと飲み会
23日：QREP発表会、交流会（一次会）、懇親会（二次会）、FERMATTA会（三次会）
24日：好奇心を慰めるため太郎源を見つけた。また、両親と晩御飯を食べた（博多駅の後ろにある焼き鳥屋で）
25日：後輩（少人数である東南アジア、学部の留学生の人たち）の二人と飲み会
26日：卒業式、祝賀会、引き継ぎ二回目のための準備
27日：引き継ぎ二回目、研究室の個人荷物の処分、六長屋で友達とラーメン、夜は教授と助教授などと食事会
28日：友達に渡すため自転車に乗って大野城から箱崎へ。夜は中国からの留学生のともだちと食事。また学部1、2年生の間で同じクラス（二組）の飲み会に合流。ボウリング。
29日：天神で銀行の用事、また買い物（CD、文具）。シンガポール人と大名に行って何回かお世話になったタイ料理屋（ジャミンカ）で食事。シンガポール人と中洲の近くで軽く花見を。シンガポール人と九大正門の前の御島でちゃんこ鍋。シンガポール人と楽市街道でソフトクリームを。（ハイ、みんなたくさん食べます）その間前の研究室のBBQにちょっとだけ（5分ぐらい）顔を出した。
30日：箱崎に行ってレポートを出した。携帯電話の解約。教会の皆さんと舞鶴公園で花見（とBBQ）を。家（このニ週間ブルネイからの友達と家に住んでいた）に帰って荷物の整理を。
31日：出発。やっと。さすがSQ（シンガポール航空会社）の椅子、サービス、映画などのエンタテインメント、そして一番重要な食べものは全部質がいい。あまり乗る機会がないからよかった。

さて、シンガポールで明日なにしようかな。

Touchdown

Arrived back in SG yesterday, touching down around 4 in the afternoon. Nice to be back in the green city. Well, arrived on the weekend so I've had a good rest. Starting tomorrow I will have to settle banking stuff, my driving license, getting a mobile phone, sports shoes, some furniture, hopefully a computer monitor and keyboard, etc. Of course, I will drop by the library while I'm at it...

All in good time.

みどりの町に帰ってきた

アメリカから日本に帰ってきてニ週間。毎日になんか用があって、また毎日誰かと食事する予定が入っていた。忙しかった。帰国するまえに色んな人にメールや連絡をしたかったけれども、結局できなかった。

そして今日SGに帰ってきた。湿度による肌に感じる重み。空港から出ると緑であふれる道路。道路の屋根になる木の枝。どんな方向見ても緑の葉っぱ。日本には見えない光景だ。見るだけでなんか癒される。

色々書きたいけど、とりあえず無事に帰国したという報告で。これから何日間をかけて色んな方にメールしたい。でも今日は疲れた。

Trip to California: Day 1

Somehow I hear "California Dreaming" in my head...

Be that as it may, I was in California for one week on a school trip. March 11-18. Ostensibly, the aim of the trip was to foster entrepreneurship in us students. However, the final goal was not to have everyone become entrepreneurs per se, but to encourage the students to think seriously about their future, not give up their dreams, and of course to see first-hand what it's like in Silicon Valley.

Once again, I set off with only my backpack (I was not the one with the least luggage, although I was the only person who did without a suitcase) and it was off to San Francisco airport. The flight was from Fukuoka to Narita, and then Narita to San Francisco. The intercontinental flight was via United Airlines. Suffice it to say I did not get to enjoy the inflight movies, and the food was not spectacular. Anyway, what was really interesting about the flight was the turbulence. Really bad for most of the flight. It was the first time out of Japan for a very few of the students, but what an experience it must have been for them.

Anyway, we landed safely and then proceeded to tour San Francisco for half a day before heading for our hotel in San Jose. Bright sunshine and clear skies lifted everyone's spirits after the long flight. Ate sourdough. Most of the Japanese didn't like it. Well, I mean, it was meant to be sour...

アメリカから戻ってきました

昨日、一週間のプログラムが終わり、福岡に戻ってきました。非常に充実した一週間でした。写真、感想はまたそのうち。昨日はサンフランシスコから成田、また羽田から福岡という航空便でした。飛行機の食事は、まあ、さすがUnitedだねみたいな感じです。よくない。元々飛行機の飯を期待しないのは当たり前だけど、SQとかCathayとかThaiなど航空会社の食べ物は全然上です。

成田から羽田までは三人で電車を乗って行きました。（他の人はなぜかLimousine Bus。)途中で品川駅の中を回ってみました。駅の中（改札口の中）にデパートみたいに店が並んでいました。すごい。でも所詮東京やな。まだまだ自分の場所に帰った実感はなかったです。他の二人は「ああ、日本だ」という気持ちが現れましたが、私にはまだ外国な感じでした。福岡に着くまで家に帰った感じがしませんでした。そばのダシもしょっぱくて美味しくないし。町の匂いもなんか違うし。電車の雰囲気もなんか違うし。本当にほっとしたのは福岡に着き、地下鉄に乗ったあとでしたかな。

早速今日からまた忙しい日々です。あとニ週間で帰国しますからね。

The weather in San Jose

The weather in San Jose is great! Apparently it was cold and wet last week, but we arrived when the weather turned good. And what great weather it has been for the last two days! Sunny with blue skies. The forecast is that it'll stay that way for the rest of the week. Want to write more, but I'm dead tired...

さらば、我が車

最近引越しとか旅とか帰国の準備であちこち回ったりしている。色んなことをぎりぎりまで後回しにしているし。そのせいかどうか知りませんが、今週末で旅立つ実感がまったくありません。いや、いつもそうなんですね。旅行が好きだけど、飛行機とか乗るまで実感がないですね。なんででしょうか？

そして、最近やったことといえば、月曜日に帰国の航空券を取りに行って、友達と食事、など。火曜日に荷物を船便で国に送りました。合計ほぼ70kgでした。20kgの段ボール二つと27kgの段ボール一つ。アパートの三階から下ろしたとき死にそうでした。そして今日、警察署に行って国際運転免許を作りました。また箱崎に行って友達に車を渡しました。

今考えてみたら記念写真を最後に撮ればよかったですね。でもいろいろバタバタして完全に忘れました、ほんまに。あの車で九州のあちこち回りましたね。人の最初の車がマークIIってなぜかすごいらしいですけど、自分は車に詳しくないからその珍しさをぜんぜん感じませんが。でも乗り心地はよかったです。まあ、元々他人からの貰い物で、今回もただで渡します。

車にあまり執着感がないから、あまりにも簡単に渡しましたかな。未だにあまり実感がありまへん。忙しいときの別れってこうなりますね。帰国するまえ、色んな人に会ってさよならと言いたいですが、時間は許しませんね。だったら毎日の会う時間を大切にすればという話しになりますが。

The weather in March

First the last two weeks of February felt like the last two weeks of March. Then, this past weekend saw two days with daytime highs of over 20 degrees celsius. Following that, the temperature dropped like a rock. Now, on Wednesday, it's snowing.

The weather this winter has been really strange. Wonder what the rest of the year will be like in Japan. Not that I'll be here to see it though.

Unidentified flower

Anyone know what this tree/flower is? It's blooming now, after the ume but before the sakura. Have seen them in quite a few places in Fukuoka, even in Tenjin the other day. Large white flowers that have quite a sweet scent.

水木金の旅

そして、火曜の焼きカキの次、旅です。水曜日は他の留学生と一緒に長崎のランタンフェスティバルへ行ってきました。実は前にも一、二回行ったことがあります。今度も普通にランタンとかめがね橋を楽しんだが、特に印象に残ったのは唐人屋敷あたりの狭い道々（新地中華街とまた違う場所）。日本では細道か横町自体は別にめずらしくないが、そこにはあまり見たことがないように細道がたくさんつながってあっちこっち走り、しかも坂道で上ったり下ったりしていた。雰囲気は格別だった。

そして、次の日は長い、長いドライブ。木曜の朝からOzさんと鹿児島の指宿へ向かって出発！途中でえびの高原に寄った。なぜか鹿が多い。景色は感動的だ。そして知覧へ。

残念ながら中は写真禁止でした。つづいて指宿へ。開聞岳を目指して南へ。Ozさんの友達の家で泊めてもらった。飯もいただいた。つぎの朝の観光も案内してもらった。

金曜の朝は、開聞岳と長崎鼻だった。日の出を見たぜ。

今回の指宿はぼくにとって二回目だけど、長崎鼻は初めてや。なんといっても美しい景色。

ごめん、海と空の組み合わせを色々試して同じ場面で違う雰囲気を出しみた。

そしてずっと北へ向かって走って（桜島も遠くから見たよ）、昼ご飯の時間で福岡に到着。夜は箱崎で講習。そして懇親会。楽しかった。

終わったら、すごい疲れました。

Food trip to Itoshima 2007-02-27

So, since we've finished our presentations and all, us M2s in my lab decided to have a good lunch on Tuesday. Headed for Itoshima on the west side on Fukuoka in order to have "yakikaki" or grilled oysters. Basically you pay for a tray of oysters and barbecue them over a charcoal pit. According to the people who ran the place, first you grill them flat side down for 2-3 minutes, then turn over. When the oysters pop open, you can have at them. Add soya sauce, ponzu or salt as you like. We had sazae (turban shell?) as well. Came out to 1000 yen a person.

Visited Futamigaura as well and then had Karatsu burgers on the way back. Karatsu is the name of a town in Saga prefecture, but the vans selling the burgers are present in Fukuoka too.

修論終わった、けど人生いまから

先週金曜日に修論発表終わった。その日のトップバッターだった。来てくれた人は存知してると思うが、きついコメントもらった。でも、無事終わった。

そのあと、同じ研究室の人の発表も聞いて、皆でゆっくり昼ご飯を食べた。箱崎に用事があったから行って来た。そしてサッカー。そして学校内でM2の同級生と飲み会。そして皆で夜中で24時間空いているスーパーに行って、買い物して、なんと我が家に鍋をしに来た。終了したのは朝の3時だった。しゃぶしゃぶ餅はじめて食べました。

そしてそれからぐっすり眠れた。と思ったところで、朝8時半すぎにOzさんから電話が来た。一次会でダウンして二次会に参加しなかったせいで早く起きたね。一次会の会場に置いた私物は俺らによってどこに片付けられたって。あ～あ～。まあ、もう起きてしまったし、昨日まとめな話しもできへんかったし、一緒に朝飯食おうと提案した。

学校に行ってからマックに行った。そしてのんびりと、のんびりと。昼まで。そのままベトナム料理屋で昼ご飯。

そして千早へ。他の友達とミーティングしてから晩ご飯。そしてまた他の人と軽くカラオケ。次の日（日曜）の夜は超久しぶりにmくんと食事した。そして無意味の志賀島ドライブ。mくんの人生に感動。

月曜はめっちゃめっちゃ久しぶりに自炊。自炊。いいな、自炊。そして学校に来て、OzさんとDepoへ。そのあと、箱崎へ。3時間の講義を受けた。そのあと、飲み会。すごい濃い人生を送ってる人の生き様に感動。超しっかりして、落ち着いている学部三年生に感動。ドラマにしか出ないと思ったようなセリフで妊娠告白された男の話に感動。などなど。あと二週間でこの人たちとアメリカに行って一週間を過ごすわけだけど、どうなるんだろう。とりあえず感動しまっくり状態になりそう。ミシマのちゃんこ鍋、最高。また、同じ台の人に食べ物にすごい関心があることがバレた。はい。

これからの予定：火曜：サッカー追いコン。名古屋の友人来福。水曜：長崎ランタンフェスティバル。木曜と金曜：鹿児島指宿（Ozさんの運転手になる。）金曜：サッカーをサボらざるを得ないで、箱崎でまた講義。しかも宿題をそのときまで仕上げ。

忙しい！また、その間、荷物の整理、論文の差し換えなどなども。

日本語入力

Windowsで日本語を入力するとき、たまに困るんだよね。特にメッセンジャーやっとるときとか。話し言葉を変換してくれへんもね。ということで、さっき見つけた関西クンを紹介する。残念ながら万能ではないけど、ちょっとでも役に立ったらええと思うから紹介する。関西弁の入力変換ができるようになるやで。らしい。他の方言・スラング・話し言葉は？あるんかな。

少なくとも、「今から飯食べに行かへん？」の入力は少し楽になった。はい。こういう便利ソフト、いつも探している。

ちなみに、前から自分のフールネームまでパソコンの変換辞書に単語登録したよ。カタカナの名前、ちゃんと変換してくれんからね。

ただいま論文を提出してきました。（学会とかではなく、卒業するための修了論文。）あと一週間で発表。まだまだ作業が残っています。とりあえず今日のサッカーの時間まで学校になんとか残ります。運動時間まで寝ようかな。仕事しようかな。早く新しいボールを蹴ってfootballをしたい！

重大ニュース：青春18きっぷに関して

今日、文芸ジャンキー・パラダイスを読んだら、私にとってうれしいニュースがありました。「JR発足20周年・青春18きっぷ」のプレスリリースによると、今年の春、青春18きっぷはいつもの11,500ではなく、8,000円で発売されます。これを読むと、乗りたい！という気持ちが沸いてきました。

今まで何回も乗ったことがありました。旅行ずきで、お金あまりかからず日本中色々なところを回ることができたのも青春18きっぷのおかげです。留学の最後の春、忙しいから遠くには行けないけど、もう一回関西に行きましょうかな。ムーンライトで山陽線を。時間がないから山陰線は乗れないのは残念ですけどね。

というか、本当に時間あるのでしょうか。というか、こんなぼーっとする場合やありまへん！修羅場が待っています。

でも三月が来たら、旅に出たいですね。

ちなみに、学校の梅、やっときれいに咲いてきました。ちょっとだけではんく、木全体。今度今日撮った写真をアップします。

夜中の独り言

あと二週間で、締め切りやの。がんばって仕事をちょこちょこ（全然足りない！）やってるけど、どこから手をつけばいいかようわからんであちらこちらから仕事をやってる。間に合うかな。なんとかなるとは知っとうが（どっこからの余裕ねん？）、ちゃんとしたモノを提出したうえで終わりたいじゃん。

しかも最近天気また寒くなりやがって、メタボリズムが遅くなってるやの。サッカーの時もいつもより走る気が起こさんし。たまに夜遅くまで仕事をやって、たまに朝早くから学校にきて、生活リズムも可笑しくなっとう。というか、何よりも自炊生活が外食になってることが悲しい。外食ばかりだと体がだるくなるし、元気さは一段落下やで。

なんでこんな意味無いポストを書くかというと、家に帰りたいが外は寒いから出発する時間を延ばしている。ほんでパソコンの前にうろうろしてるわけや。さーてー、次はなにしようかな。

ああ、明日朝から実験の手伝いあるやん。ささっと帰ろうぜ。もうちょっとでね。

Warm winter?

Some of the ume trees in school have started blooming. For the record, the same trees bloomed last year at the end of February / beginning of March. That's a whole month early this year. It's really a strange winter this year. Japan is having record lows for the amount of snow falling, and not just in one area. Too bad for Fadil, who wants to see snow.

On the bright side, it was pleasantly warm yesterday so I took a drive to nearby Ushikubi (牛頸) dam. That's the place in the photo. The weather didn't feel like winter at all. Wonder if it will turn cold in February or just stay this way till March. Maybe the sakura will bloom early too.

Folding time

Tired and aimless in the lab, took out some origami paper and started folding. Started with two rabbits, which I first learnt to fold 2 years ago. Had to look up the diagram on the web though. Continued with a crane and then a turtle, both from memory. The crane, I learnt ages ago. The turtle, I learnt in JC. Folding it brings back memories of those days spent at the back of the lecture theatre, in the canteen, doing inane things like writing in the class journal and folding paper animals.

If you're from my JC class and reading this, can you still fold? I never learnt the deer properly though, too difficult. Besides, it involved scissors, always a bother...

Football news

Pretty tired right now, so I'll just post up some football news below. The link to the article is here if you need it. So the semi-finalists for the Tiger Cup/Asean championships are Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. Hardly know any of the Singaporean players now...

On another note, they've shown the Thierry Henry goal against Liverpool on Japanese television quite a few times now - the one where he passes the ball into open space on the left and then runs to get it himself, beating a defender near the sideline, dribbles it back into the box and then scores with a deceptively slow ball. Yah, if only I can run like that...

Football: Thailand, Malaysia qualify for Asean championship semi-finals

SINGAPORE : Vietnam sensationally leap-frogged Indonesia into the Asean football championship semi-finals on Wednesday thanks to a 9-0 pummelling of Laos.

The Vietnamese were third in Group B after two draws in their opening games, but join Singapore in the last four on goal difference after the defending champions held Indonesia 2-2.

Singapore will play Malaysia in the two-legged semi-finals starting on January 23, while Vietnam face regional powerhouse Thailand.

But the result spells heartache for Indonesia, who miss the semis for the first time despite not losing a match and with the group's top three teams all finishing on five points.

It may also mean the end of Indonesian coach Peter Withe, who was told he must win the tournament to keep his job.

Vietnam started their goal blitz early, with Le Cong Vinh getting the first of his hat-trick before a minute had passed.

Phan Thanh Binh got four and Ngueyn Van Bien added another two, while Le Cong Vinh passed up the chance to hit double figures by missing a penalty on 56 minutes.

Hapless Laos leave with a lamentable goal difference of minus-22 in three games, their sole strike coming in the 3-1 loss to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Indonesia twice came from behind against Singapore but could not find the winning strike in the tense 2-2 draw at National Stadium.

Noh Alam Shah put Singapore ahead with a 10th-minute penalty before Ilham Jaya Kusuma levelled for the visitors.

Indra Sahdan restored Singapore's lead shortly after half-time only for Indonesia's Zaenal Arif to hit back minutes later.

Singapore 'keeper Lionel Lewis made an excellent save from Ponaryo Astaman in the dying moments that kept their title defence on track.

今日、やっとサッカーの再開。週に二回学校の人とやってるサッカーは年末年始のため休みに入ったが、やっと再開。そして、今日はゴール入れた。珍しく。めったにないこと。異常。だって、この二年間で二回目だと思う。恐らく大学に入って以来、三回目か四回目かな。サッカーで点が取れるなんて。僕、スポーツ神経なしやけん。色んなスポーツを友達とやってるけど、成長はすべていまいちだね。まあ、楽しければいいよね。

何をやってみたことがあるって？サッカー、バスケットボール、バドミントン、テニス、スカッシュ、ボウリング、ビリヤード、卓球ぐらいかな。バレーボールもやったことがあるけど、苦手。痛いんだもん。他のは、相手さえあれば、楽しいからやる。とはいっても、そんなに運動してないけど。

今週ずっと実験やってたから、今日久しぶりのサッカーは特に楽しく味わった。ゴールもうれしかったけど、久しぶりに体を動かしたのもよかった。

あ、そういえば、今年スキーかスノーボードに行かなきゃ。これから（卒業してから）しばらくできんからね。

木の実; The fruit mysterious

Hmm, what is this fruit? It's from those trees that line the driveway into my school campus. It's not maple or chestnut, but the tree has leaves like maple leaves, although the leaves for this tree are three-lobed. Anybody know?

この実、学校に拾いました。前から気になったけど、なんの木の実でしょう。僕にはわかりまへん。栗でもないし、もみじの実でもないし。木の葉っぱはもみじみたいけど、大きくて、もみじの代表的な五つの裂片に対して三つの裂片をもちます。知っている人、教えてください。

Update: After some searching on the internet - using terms like "three lobes", "palmate" "maple", etc. I think I can conclude it's a sweetgum. From the japanese sites, it's probably American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) or Chinese sweetgum (Liquidambar formosana) since they seem to be the only ones planted in Japan. Well, something new learnt today. Cheers!

追加：インターネットで色々調べたところ、おそらく楓（フウ）かモミジバフウと判断していいでしょう。もっと詳しいサイトも見つけましたよ。フウについてとモミジバフウについてのサイトです。いい勉強になりました。

It's 2007, and a happy new year to all!

あけましておめでとうございます！

Let's see, what have I been doing? On New Year's Eve I had steamboat at my place with some friends, we had a great time. This morning we accompanied St to Tenjin to finally, finally obtain the Nintendo Wii he has been pining for. Walked around Tenjin a bit before I came back. At least the cold weather has taken a break since yesterday. It's not freezingly cold anymore. Good.

Hope everyone has a great year ahead.

ほんで、何をしたかというと、大晦日は友達と家で鍋をした。かなりたくさん食べた。最後はもう俺ともう一人のシンガポール人が食い片付けた。やはりお祝いのときのシンガポール人はたくさん食べるやね。紅白を見て、みんなに必死にメールして、楽しかった。そして今日はStさんと天神にNintendo Wiiの購入応援。ずっと前からほしかったStさんはやっと手に入れたね。おめでとう。天神をちょっと回って、大野城に帰ってきた。元旦に初売りで盛り上がっている店そんなになかったね。ビックカメラとVivreぐらいだったね。明日からかな。

Winter weather

Highest temperature today was about 6 degrees, and might dip below zero tonight. However, it's not so much the temperature as it is the wind. It's howling outside even now, and has been doing so the whole day. Even in the sunshine. At the end of the corridor there are some vents for ventilation, and you can hear them singing notes as the wind blows over them. Brr...

シンガポールのドラマ

最近、深夜に台湾とか韓国とかのテレビドラマは放送されています。そして、ちょっと前から気づきましたが、実はシンガポールのテレビドラマの一つも放送されています。最初は台湾の俳優も出ているから台湾のドラマかなと思っていましたが、少し見たら場所はシンガポールでした。そして今ちょっと調べたら、2004年にシンガポールで作り上げて放送されました。

日本にいる間も長いから、ほとんどの俳優たちは分からないわけです。ドラマの質はまあまあかな。でも、やはりシンガポール風ドラマだなとは思いました。放送時間は金曜の深夜であり、あら？今日は最終回らしいです。KBCで深夜の2時30分からみたいやで。深夜の2時30分から。ドラマのなまえは恋恋水園～恋のスプラッシュ。

Cold

Cold lah. It's so cold lah. That's why I don't feel like getting up in the mornings. That's why I don't feel like doing anything.

It snowed on Sunday, the first snow of this winter in Fukuoka. It was only a little ice mixed in the rain at first in the morning, but proper snow fell later in the afternoon. Nothing on the ground though. Have to wait longer for that. Well, Sunday continued into Monday and then Tuesday, but the weather remained cold all throughout. Frost formed on my windshield at night. My hands felt painful by the end of football yesterday. Temperature's a little better today though.

To end off, I would like to post this video which I was introduced to courtesy of Takchek. The chorus, fittingly, is "Je ne veux pas travailler", ie. "I don't want to work"

Morning

Woke up at 6.30am this morning. Left the house at 7. Outside, my breath hang in the air. Everything was a soft grey, shrouded in mist. Old people were taking walks in the cold dawn. Picked up and then drove my friend to the airport. The sun came out on the way, but thin whispers of mist still lingered on the way back. Stopped and had breakfast at MacDonald's before heading to school.

Barcelona played well last night. Amazing match. Club America wasn't in top shape, though that certainly doesn't take away anything from Barcelona's fine performance.

食：大戸屋、竹林

昨日の夜、また4マイナス1で夕ご飯を食べに行きました。新しいところをみつけましたよ。「大戸屋」というチェーン店。なんかファミリーレストランみたいが、それよりややおしゃれな感じ。Joyfullだけど黄色の変わりに黒色を使って、和風をアピールしようとしている店。（なんといっても、ドリンクバーは七種類のお茶バーだからさ。）インターネットで検索したら、東京に結構店舗があるみたいだけど
、福岡県には二つしかないね。ファミリーレストランだけどおしゃれの格好…よくわからない雰囲気かもしれないけど、まあ、おいしいかな。値段もJoyfull並み。

ちなみに、先週は「竹林」という小さい焼肉屋を見つけました。昼は定食で夜は焼肉みたいです。ちょっと入って聞いたら、他のお客さんが全然いなかったから、夜なのに昼の定食も出してくれました。石焼ビビンバはうまかったです。住所はここ。

昨日は教会の人たちと博多駅の近くの公園でホームレスの方のための炊き出しを行ってきました。少々雨は降っていたが、途中で止んで、大雨にならなかったのは感謝すべきですね。天気もあれで、来た人数は50人でいつもの半分以下ですね。まあ、晴れていなくても、イチョウの黄葉は風の中キラキラ揺れていました。きれいでした。

今日の午後は友達と007の映画を見に行きました。今度は俳優が変わって、以前のPierce Brosnanとかなり違う雰囲気のボンドです。まあ、話の設定はボンドの最初のごろで、ボンドがまだちょっと未熟な部分があるように書いてあるのも面白いですね。車は相変わらずかっこういいものでした。

映画のあと、飯を食べてから、軽く天神のイルミネーションを見てから帰ってきました。

最近また寒くなってきましたね。僕、さきから頭痛ですわ。
